Using a bulb mode on your DSLR, you can get the shutter remains open as long as necessary. If you use bulb mode, a remote shutter release is very useful to avoid camera shake (it can happen even on a solid tripod). If you do not have a remote release, you can use the self timer on your DSLR, set to 10 seconds so you can give it time to stabilize.
Black card is used to block the lens in each interval when the fireworks appear in the sky, so that the exposure time is optimized to record the fireworks, and not overly expose other parts. The second reason is that you do not catch the smoke caused by fireworks. Be careful not to touch the lens, causing some movement that will cause the camera to shake.
